Testicle discomfort/pain

by Tommy420, May 02, 2007 12:00AM
Hi doc, I have two separate questions, so please bare with me.

1) About 5 weeks ago I was diagnosed with gonorrhea by a urethral swab test which was then examined under a microscope (diagnosis was done 10 days after my questionable sexual encounter). I was given 250mg IV shot of ceftriaxone and 1000mg of Zithromax and told not to have sex for 7 days. About 10-12 days after my medication, all symptoms went away. (I never had any discharge, just some burning while urination and recurrent urination).

For the past two weeks now, i've been experiencing discomfort in my left testicle, almost as if someone kicked me there. I went to the doc last thurs and got a urine analysis done, which came back negative. He also did a UTI test which was negative. Furthermore, he did a urine (DNA amplfication) test for gonorrhea and chlamydia, both of which came back negative. I'm trying to figure out what's causing the pain? There is no swelling and it's not tender to the touch. My doc suggested that it was psychological since I contracted gonorrhea in the first place, but the pain/discomfort is definitely there. What could possibly be causing this? Can it be due to teh original gonorrhea I acquired which was currently cured according to my urine test?

2) My second question is about Propecia. I've been on it for almost 3 years now. I've read internet postings about the fact that finestaride might cause infertility and some peopel experienced pain in their testicles. Could this be a cause, even though I never had a problem with it thus far?

Thanks for your time doc.

To answer your questions:
1) Imaging the testicle can be considered.  A cyst, mass or varicocele can lead to the discomfort.  A scrotal ultrasound would be a reasonable testing option at this point.  Looking at the prostate with a massage or transrectal ultrasound can also be considered.

2) I looked up the side effects for finasteride.  The most common are impotence, decreased libido and breast enlargement.  I am not aware of an association with infertility and testicular pain.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
