Urethrits, UTI or STD?

by KMan215, Apr 17, 2007 12:00AM
On March 23rd I had unprotected sex with a friend. March 28 I had a burning sensation when urinating and the tip was a little red. I went to my Dr. on March 29th and he said my urine test came back negative for a UTI. He then gave me a complete STD swab test and both blood tests for herpes. The burning sensation completely went away on April 1st without any medications. On April 9th my Dr. called and said all STD swabs and blood tests were negative. (I was swabbed when my pain was at its highest point.) On April 10th the friend I had sex with called and informed me that she was having an outbreak, first of her life. She said her symptoms started on April 5th. Her boyfriend has had no symptoms of anything. They both went and got tested and he tested positive for herpes by blood test. She got her test back today and her swab test came back positive for herpes. Here I am, April 17th and the only symptoms I've had were burning when urinating for four days. Kidney stones run in my family (both parents). I don't know what happened back a few weeks ago, my girlfriend has had no symptoms of any kind. I have had no bumps, itching or blisters. I was wondering what your opinion was on what happened to me. Could I have had an infection in my urethra? Could this have been my first herpes outbreak but my swabs were wrong? By burning sensation has not come back since and no pains or anything else.  Was I lucky enough that it was a bacteria thing, what are the chances that it has nothing to do with my urinary tract or urethra and it's herpes?  I didn't think this was a STD question and am still hoping it's not. I'm just nervous that a kidney stone or a herpes outbreak is on its way. Maybe nothing, maybe anxiety but is there any other tests I should take? Thank you for time Dr. I appreciate it.

Herpes is certainly possible and can lead the burning.  Obtaining appropriate smears and cultures should be repeated to ensure that herpes isn't present.  A blood test looking for the herpes antibody can be considered as well.

I would also look at the prostate.  This can be done via a rectal exam as well as prostatic massage.  Any prostatic fluid should be sent for analysis and culture.  If negative, a transrectal ultrasound can image the prostate for any abscesses.

If infection has been ruled out, a cystoscopy can be considered to exclude anatomical abnormalities, or a CT done to rule out kidney stones.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
