Decreased Sex Drive and Prostatitis

by jbolek, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
I am 46 yrs old, married 15 yrs and have chronic prostatitis. About 2 months ago my wife and I had a very enjoyable vacation with many intimate moments. During the vacation, my prostatitis flared up and took some OTC supplement which did not help. Prior to the vacation, I routinely took Serogen SP which helped keep the symptons in check, but I negelected to take it with me on the trip.

After we returned, and several busy weeks, my wife asked me why we haven't been "together". I told her that it was just the stress of getting back to the grind. I had no real interest in sex. About that same time, I started browsing porn sites. Although the images were stimulating, I still was not interested in sex. I did, however, take care of myself about once a week. This was always in the morning and associated with waking up with an erection.

The one factor that has been different is that I had not been taking the Serogen SP nor any other supplement for my prostate since our return.  This all leads to the question of: Can untreated prostatitis lead to a decrease in sex drive? (I am assuming that my prostate is rebelling and is further enlarged). OR is there something else that is going on here.

Thank you in advance for your response.

I am not aware of specific studies correlating prostatitis with a decreased sex drive.  That being said, it may be possible that there is an association.

Further diagnostic tests, such as a prostatic massage or transrectal ultrasound can be considered.  Appropriate treatment can be done with an extended course of antibiotics.

You may also want to consider obtaining a testosterone level if sex drive is affected.  A low level of testosterone can lead to this scenario.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
