Symptoms of Prostatitis

by distressed1, Dec 03, 2005 12:00AM
Hi Dr., I have had a couple of bouts of prostatitis off over the past few years and am being treated by a doctor.  This week I saw the doctor because I had these symptoms:  aching in testicles and groin, slight fever, fatigue, and mild difficulty urinating (no pain, just decreased flow).  He prescribed 14 days of Cipro (500MG) to start with, and I began on Tuesday.  By Thursday the pain in the testicles started to subside, but I also started feeling more like I had the flu .. tender lymph nodes under my jaw and more fatigue.  Is this characteristic of prostatitis that is being treated?  I don't recall experiencing this before.  Last night it felt like my fever broke during the night, but I didn't sleep very well. I also notice that my urine is slightly cloudy.  The whole thing has me worried because I'm not used to feeling tender lymph nodes.  I am very anxious that something more serious could be going on.  I can tend to obsess over health issues, and can get paralyzed over them.  I sometimes wonder if I am making myself sicker by obsessing about everything I could possibly have.  I appreciate your guidance.

Cipro is a reasonable antibiotic for prostatitis.

Lymph nodes around the jaw can be indicative of an infection in the head, neck or chest, as well as some STDs.

Observing the lymph nodes, so they decrease in size after the antibiotics, should be done.  I would also be examined to ensure there isn't any other infection going on.

A urethral swab or urine sample should be done to check for STDs (like gonorrhea or chlamydia).

If the lymph nodes do not improve while on antibiotics, you should follow up for a more comprehensive evaluation.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
