Frequent Urination

by Peoples, Nov 30, 2005 12:00AM
--I am a 25 year old male and for as long as I can remember I feel like I have had to urinate way more than other people. I have noticed and my family and friends have noticed it. I have no family history of this (i.e. Father and brother do not suffer from this, mother unknown). My Grandmother is diabetic, my father had bladder cancer 6years ago and is in remission, father has high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

--Example: Tonight, I had a V8 around 5:30pm, went to dinner around 6:50pm (felt urge to urinate around 6:30, not bad), Urinated when I got to the restaurant (6:50pm), had diet cokes during the meal, and had to urinate again at around 7:20pm, felt urge to go again around 7:40pm.

--Frequency: This is a pretty typical scenario for me, whether I am drinking water, juice, alcohol or caffeinated beverages I always feel like I have to go w/n 10 minutes. Its embarassing, I don't always have to go during the meal but I normally have the urge to go. Normally I don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to urinate unless I drink something right before I go to bed.

--Urine Characteristics:

-The urine is straw/yellow colored and has distinct odor (I always thought it smelled like bacon) if I don't drink alot of fluids and

-Clear or colorless if I do drink alot of fluids. No cloudiness or blood or pain during urination, no trouble urinating.

--History:

-25years old

-Recently stopped chewing tobacco (1.5months)

-Smoke 2-3 cigarettes a day (1.5months)

-I am taking Buproprion XR 300mg daily since April 05

-Suffer from xerostomia (since I started taking Buproprion)

-I have hypertension (normally around 135-140/85-90) for about 6mo-year that I know of, 120/80 in '02

-I have gained alot of weight last 3years (6'2" 220lbs now and 190lbs in '02).

This is something that has bothered me for years and now that I am getting older I am starting to be concerned. I plan on seeing a doctor in the near future but I wanted to start here. Any ideas?

The most common causes of urinary frequency would be infection and diabetes mellitus.  These conditions can be easily ruled out using blood and urine tests.

If normal, you can consider more uncommon conditions - like diabetes insipidus (different from diabetes mellitus).  This is a disorder of neurohormones that can lead to urinary frequency.  This would be diagnosed via a water restriction test.

You can also consider a cystoscopy to evaluate the lower urinary tract for any anatomical abnormalities.

Medications can also lead to urinary frequency, and can be reviewed with your personal physician.

You can also consider a referral to a urologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
