Prostitis Causes

My husband was recently diagnosed with prostitis (he is 45).  I am not familiar with this condition and don't understand the possible causes.

Could this condition be the result of an STD?

The more common reason of prostatitis is because of infection.  It may be result of an STD, but there are other causes as well.  If this diagnosis is suspected, I would suggest tests for STDs as well as a prostatic massage to evauate and culture the prostatic fluid.

There are also some non-infectious causes that can present with prostatitis-like syndromes - an example of this would be bladder neck obstruction.

Some cases of prostatitis requires an extended period of antibiotics (sometimes as long a 12 weeks).  If antibiotics don't help, imaging of the prostate (i.e. a transrectal ultrasound) can be considered.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
