I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection a couple of months ago, since then i have been on amoxicillan, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin (for one day as i developed an allergy to it) and i am now back on ciprofloxacin, 250mg 2 times daily. I am concerned because i am feeling very nauseated (3 days on and off, mostly on) and i have the urge to urinate all the time although nothing will come out, or very little. I do not have a fever and i have a lot of gas. For the longest time befor ei was diagnosed with a UTI i would feel sick when i had to urinate, I am wondering if this constant nausea and fatigue is a sign that the infection is out of control and has become complicated.
Thank you for your time.

Dear Anne
Thanks for your questions.
The incidence of side effects for Cipro is low . Although a common side effect of Cipro is nausea, followed by headache, restlessness, abdominal pain and bloating . Your initial urine culture can and probably has directed the choice of antibiotics you have been prescribed. It is also possible , since your symptom of nausea is so common with many other disease processes, you could have another diagnosis plus a UTI, especially if you have had nausea much longer than your UTI. .
Frequent urination is a symptom of the Urinary tract infection (UTI) and can last for a month or more. A repeat urine culture should be performed about 3 to 7 days after your last dose of antibiotic to see if the bacteria is gone. If a urinary tract infection spreads to the blood stream this called sepsis. Signs of sepsis are; fever, chills, low blood pressure, fast heart rate and the patient really can look very sick. Sepsis does not sound like your symptoms at all.
