My son just had a physical exam for football and the doctor (who is not a pediatrician) indicated that his testicles were very small in size. What could this mean? And what is the "average" normal size of a boys' testicles who is 14-15 years of age?

Dear Susan,
I would not be concerned about the size of your sons testicles if he is developing in a normal way and they are both equal size. Different kids reach puberty at different times and this is when the testicles grow the most. Testicular enlargement is the earliest sign of puberty onset in boys, and successive pubertal stages are marked by further testicular enlargement. If he is healthy, has normal hair growth and is able to have an erection I think you have little to worry about. You could ask his primary care physician to evaluate his general development and determine if there is a problem. If your doctor is concerned, a blood test consisting of a testosterone level, LH level, and FSH level could be drawn. If these tests where abnormal then he could be referred to an endocrinologist, however, I would give time some more time before these actions are taken.
