I had a kidney stone for the first time two months ago. I underwent lithotripsy one month ago to break up the stone. I am now having sharp pains in my lower back and abdomen. Is it possible to have another stone so soon???

Dear Bunker,
It is important for you to have a post ESWL x-ray to make sure your surgery was a complete success. It is possible for a small fragment to be left over from the surgery, and this is now obstructing your ureter causing you to have renal colic symptoms. I think it would be unlikely for you to have formed another stone so quickly, particularly since you are not a chronic stone former.
Make sure you stay well hydrated this summer and if the pain continues, return to your doctor.
