what is the procedure to remove a hydrocele. i am a 48 year old male with a hernia and a hydrocele

Dear Vaness:

During normal development of a male, the testicles descend from inside the abdomen, through the inguinal canal, and into the scrotum. As the testicle descends it pulls down a thin layer with it which initially acts like a pocket (potential space), and later obliterates. If the opening in the abdominal wall through which the testicle passed through does not close down, the abdominal contents (such as intestines) will protrude through it which is essentially what we call a hernia. If fluid collects in the potential space mentioned earlier (that has not obliterated), the fluid will collect in the scrotum around the testicle. which is referred to as a hydrocele.

Hydrocele repair or hydrocelectomy is an operation that is usually performed through an incision in the scrotum. However, if you are having a hernia repair, it can be done through the same incision which is in the groin (inguinal incision). The fluid is essentially removed, and part of the thin layer which I referred to earlier is removed. The fluid may reaccumulate (recurrent hydrocele) in 5 to 10 percent of cases. I hope this answers you question regarding hydroceles and hydrocelectomy. Wish you the best.
