Subject: Re: Blood in semen I am a 64 year old male. Six months ago I had a prostrate biopsy becuse of an enlarged prostrate. The resluts were negative. For a brief period after the biopsy I had blood in my semen whcih ended after about two weeks. Just recently (two days ago) I noted blood in my semen each day. Please advise. = Dear Joe, Blood in the semen is referred to as hematospermia. This is very common after prostate biopsy, and is usually self- limited. Usually it resolves within a few weeks of a biopsy. Since it has been 6 months since your biopsy, we would recommend the routine evaluation for hematospermia. This involves a physician taking your history, a physical examination including rectal exam, a PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test, and a urinalysis. If these tests are all normal, you can be reassured. Hematospermia usually resolves spontaneously, but often recurs. If infection is thought to be a cause antibiotics can be given. Remember that aspirin containing medicines increase the risk of bleeding. More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its satellites (1 800 653 6568).
