Question Title: Why is beer bad for the prostate

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Benign Prostate Disease

Read where you should avoid beer if having prostate problems, How does beer affect the prostate? Thanks

Dear Bill,
Beer inhibits the affect of ADH(anti diuretic hormone) on the collecting tubules of the kidney, and therefore causes a diuresis. This in turn results in more urine being formed and individuals experience frequency and the need to urinate more than times when they abstain from alcohol. I’m not aware of any direct effects of alcohol or beer on the prostate itself. However, in the presence of prostate problems such as BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) which cause difficulty in passing urine, drinking beer may exacerbate the frequency and urinating problem. Wish you the best.
