Forum: The Maternal and Child Health Forum
Topic: Childhood Disease

Our 2 1/2 year old son has been diagnosed with this desease. I would
interested in hearing from anyone that has experience with this disease.

Dear sir ;

Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is an avascular necrosis of the capital femoral epyphysis . In simple words , the growing head of the femur bone ( the bone making the thigh ) doesn’t get enough blood supply for various causes during the rapid growth phase resulting in its deformity.
Typical onset is between 2-12 years , boys more than girls . It may affect both sides in 20% .
Most children present with a painless limp with mild to moderate pain in the front part of the thigh.
There is a potential for developing osteoarthritis of the hip in adulthood, but the risk for this is negligible in children 5 years and younger at clinical onset.
Prevention of more femoral head deformity and future osteoarthritis are the only justification for treatment . Otherwise , the condition is self-healing. . Expectant observation for all children younger than 6 years at onset is recommended with close follow up physicals and X-rays for monitoring growth and molding of the femoral head being essential.
Treatment is indicated in : children 6 years and older at onset. Involvement of the side pillar of the femoral head. Extrusion of the femoral head on certain radiographic views . For better understanding of these indications , you may discuss the X-ray findings of your son with the orthopedic specialist.
