Question Title: Atrocious Abdominal Pains!!!! HELP!

Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
Topic: Colon Cancer

Hi,
I am a 24 year old mother. I have been having severe lower abdominal cramps. It all started soon after my son was born 2 years ago. I had a hemmroid surgery soon after he was born. Then last year I started having rectal bleeding. I went to the doctor and was told it was just hemmroids. At this time I told the doctor I was having severe cramping in the lower abdomain. She suggested I go to a OBGYN. I went recently to an Endocrynologist and was told I was Anemic and about the pains to go to a OBGYN. So I went to an OBGYN and without testing was told I had Endometriosis. I was told to go on birth control. I am not so convinced this is what I have. I have now become constipated and I almost passed out last week with these cramps. I had a bowel movement and felt a little better. I don't feel that the doctors here are taking these cramps seriously. I feel I could have colon cancer or at least should be tested to rule it out. I know cancer is not something to play with and I feel alone in my worries. I think that my age keeps these doctors from even mentioning the possibility. Where can I begin? On this island there are no specialists in this area. HELP!! I am very frightened!

Dear Christina,
It is unlikely that you have colon cancer as the cause of your symptoms. It is necessary, however, to undergo an investigation. You should request a barium enema to exclude disease of your colon. A flexible sigmoidoscopy is also needed. Hopefully, the barium enema will also visualize the terminal ileum and exclude Crohn's Disease. If the terminal ileum is not seen, then you will need a small intestine series.
