Question Title: Reading aids helpful in advancing Macular DegenerationForum: The Eye Care Forum

|
My mother with macular degeneration has been using a TV monitor enlarging reading machine. Her condition is deteriorating. She cannot read labels on product cans or bottles or read instruc- tions on boxes or cans to help her prepare food. This is very hard for her to live with and adjust to. Is there any reading device, preferably portable, of course, but ANYTHING that can help her keep her independence and mental health.
As you are aware, macular degeneration can be devastating to a persons life. Fortunately, there is a lot of research in this area and I am sure one day soon we will have better treatments available. There are ophthalmologists or optometrists in most communities that specialize in patients with low vision. This would certainly be one source. You can also speak with your local library to get the name of the names of associations that specialize in visual aids for people with macular degeneration or other eye conditions. Yes there are visual aids out there that can significantly improve her useful vision but there are limitations to all of these aids. Start with library or the phone book for those groups that I previously mentioned. Good luck. This information was provided for medical educational purposes only. Sincerely, HFHS M.D.-JL
