I'm not sure if I posted in the correct topic area or even if you even have an area dealing with retinal concerns (is there?), but I'm hoping you can give me some general information concerning eye surgery. Almost 3 months ago I had scleral buckle surgery for a detached retina. I'm still having some discomfort in my eye, especailly if I blink hard or look hard in any direction. Just wondering if you can tell me how long it can take for an eye to recovery from surgery? How long is discomfort after a surgery like mine normal? Amanda
___ Amanda, A scleral buckle is a small silicone band which is placed around an eye to partially compress it (like a belt) and repair a detached retina. The band becomes covered with some scar tissue as it heals. Sometimes, this scarring can cause discomfort, especially if the eye is moved far in any direction. This usually improves after a few months. Anyone with persistant pain after surgery should have their eye examined by their ophthalmologist to assure that the scleral buckle is in the correct location and that there is no sign of infection. This information is provided for general medical education purposes only. Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition. Sincerely yours, HFHS M.D.-NI *Keyword: scleral buckle, retinal detachment surgery
