end stage liver disease

the upper gi doc says hes at end stage liver disease, first of all what does this mean. and will it get any worse from here since his cirrhosis is from alcohol. the doc gives him 6 mths to a few years to live we were wondering why since he has quit drinking. his symptoms include bleeding from the esophagus, but they did TIPS and this has stopped the bleeding but still continues to swell even after taking lasix and aldectone. we dont now what to expect as a family and are a bit confused as to the docs prognosis. also his PT and PTT are normal, his bilirubin is 3.7 and albumin is 2.7. pleases give me any info you can, i would appreciate it.
