How contagious in Hepatitis A?

A family member recently was diagnosed with Hepatitis A and is now quite jaundiced. How contagious is this? Can this disease be contracted by handling spoiled food? What precautions should be taken? Also, do you know of anything that can relieve the symptoms and jaundice? What about milk thistle and herbal teas? Thanks in advance for your response.
