Tearing in one eye

by Phillyfish, Jun 04, 2005 12:00AM
I have had tearing/crying of the right eye off and on for the past 2 years.  It first came about when I underwent Chemo (CMF) for breast cancer.  In April I had a basal cell carcinoma right next to the eye removed (there for at least 6 years).  I saw an ophthomologist recently and he said the lower lid tear duct appeared scarred but not completely closed.  He tried enlarging it by probing with an awl type instrument.  He then inserted a needle and released a saline solution which did enter my nose and throat, but the eye continues to tear.  He is sending me to another specialist to have it surgically opened. I'm 57, female, and have a large "web" from the Moh's micrographic basal cancer surgery.

Could the basal cell cancer have caused this and if so, how do they check for spread of the cancer?  What tests, etc.  Can cancer spread through the tear ducts?

What else would cause scarring in the absence of infection?

How successful are these surgery's?

Is one method more preferable than another? (breaking the nasal bone versus implanting plastic tubes)

Can they also fix the "web" at the same time?

Are there other solutions I could consider?

What would the newest techniques be?

What type of surgeon should I be seeing: plastic, opthomologist, eye/ear/nose/throat?

I am an active competetive swimmer (pool & open water) and also dragonbaot race in contaminated rivers.  Would surgery interfere with my sports?

Any info or advice on this subject would be most appreciated.
