yellow eyes

The whites of my eyes are yellow but the thing that is odd is that its not completely yellow. It seems that when my eyes are in a natural "open" position-the sclera that is exposed to air is yellow but the sclera thats covered by my eyelids is still white....so when i completely open my eyes(wide eyed) it looks like a yellow line going across my eyeballs........is this due to exposure of everyday things(dust, pollen, cig smoke, dirt, pet dander) or may it still be a symptom of liver problems?
