EXTREME haziness after both cataract and detached retinal surgery

by aldroughty, May 06, 2007 12:00AM
Dear Community

I am a male, aged 76 and have had short sight since the age of nine.  27 years ago I suffered multiple retinal detachments (six in both eyes over a period of just eight months).

These were successfully dealt with (both by surgery and laser treatment) and the retinas have remained in place.  But there is now some degree of gradual atrophy.  After the retinal operations two cataracts developed but fortunately altered very slowly.

In October 2005 it became necessary to operate on the cataracts for lens replacement.  These operations were at first successful, but in a short period capsular phimosis developed in both eyes and two further operations were necessary to correct that.  The results were at first satisfactory, but some degree of haziness developed in both eyes which has proved to be progressive and is still worsening.  I have been given no specific reason for this haziness.  There is also a severe problem of glare: both disability glare and discomfort glare. In addition there is an element of extreme myopia.  Double vision also sometimes occurs.  The haziness tends to get worse in the course of each day and by the evening causes feeling of very acute discomfort.

I have two questions

One, can a cause be suggested for this haziness (muscular weakness has also been mentioned)?
Two, is there any medication available which can moderate the effect of the haziness?

Thank you for any help.

'but some degree of haziness developed in both eyes which has proved to be progressive and is still worsening. I have been given no specific reason for this haziness.'

its going to be hard for me to comment on this.  i dont know, either.

'There is also a severe problem of glare: both disability glare and discomfort glare'

very common after cataract extraction.  try dark, polarized sunglasses.

'The haziness tends to get worse in the course of each day and by the evening causes feeling of very acute discomfort.'

then it sounds like possible corneal edema.  do you or have you ever had corneal edema?  you could try to use over the counter hypertonic eyedrops (like muro 128) to try and alleviate the symptoms...
