detached retina

by francis56, Apr 19, 2007 12:00AM
I am a 50 year old male.  I had a detached retina(macula off) in early Set. 2006 in my left eye.  My vision was -5.25 before the detachment.  It was repaired by a retinal specialist with scleral buckling surgery after conservative attempts failed.  I had the surgery 10 days after diagnosis.
At 7 monts post surgery my vision is 20/80(corrected) with virtually no change for the last 4 months.  My vision is distorted with objects appearing small and out of proportion.  Several doctors have examined my eye and report successful reattacment and that the retina appears normal.  My lens is clear with no cataract development so far.  I do have some floaters and debris in the vitreous.  I am a dentist and am unable to practice due to my loss of depth perception.  What is your opinion on the chance of recovery at this point and is there any other treatment available to pursue?

really small/little chance of ever seeing better than you see right now in that eye.  if you are best-corrected 20/80 right now, chances are you are probably going to be 20/80 forever in that eye.

there would only be 'further treatment' in that eye if there was another problem/diagnosis, which you say there is not.  for example, if you had a macular epiretinal membrane, you could have a 'peel'.  or if you had a lot of large vitreal debris, you could have a vitrectomy.  but if 'several doctors' have examined you and cant come up with another diagnosis/procedure, then you are likely stuck at 20/80 in that eye.

Unfortunately complications with eye surgery are very common. Have you mentioned this to your surgeon or primary eye doctor? That would be the next step. They know your eyes better than anyone could tell you over the internet...

I have asked my specialist and he says I could still turn the corner.  He says I should give it at least a year before the prognosis can be determined.  I just wanted to get your take from similar cases you may have seen.  I realize without an examination and details, it's hard to give a definitive answer.  Thank you.

Thanks for your input.  I am having tests done in a month or so to check the circulation in that eye and if I understood correctly, to check the thickness of my retina.  I assume those tests are to address the issues you raise.  I was willing to go wherever or do whatever was necessary, but my reading on the subject, as well as my specialist's opinion, lead me to believe all that could be done has been done (except for the things you pointed out).
