Pinhole Test Results

by mlm343, Apr 13, 2007 12:00AM
As part of a general eye exam I had a pinhole test. Results 20/20 -2 right eye and 20/25 +2 left eye. As I understand it the numbers represent what my corrected vision could be with specs. But can you tell me what the -2 and +2 represent? I'm a rezoom/restor recipient of six months, uncorrected left eye 20/30 and right eye 20/40 - lots of ghosting right eye). Am considering glasses for night driving and going for follow up in two weeks with my surgeon for evaluation to try to address the ghosting problem. (Pinhole test was done on my vacation, not by my surgeon.) Is the +2 and -2 significant?

pinhole test doesnt mean much to me.  people with serious corneal or lenticular  distortion still see well with pinhole.  docs and patients alike put way too much emphasis on that test IMO.  its not really predictive of anything.

ok i'm off the soapbox now lol

but the +2 and -2 means that you got extra letters right or missed extra letters.

so 20/20-2 would mean that you got most of the letters right on the 20/20 line, but missed 2 of them

20/25+2 means you got all of the letters right on the 20/25 line, and an additional 2 letters right on the 20/20 line.

20/25+2 and 20/20-2 are really, really similar acuities.  only 1-2 letters difference between those 2.
