detached retina in eye with old trauma

by jkaos, Apr 08, 2007 12:00AM
I've just found out my retina is detaching in an eye that was severely injured at age 6 (age 49 now). Doc told me it will probably continue and I will lose all sight in that eye I if I do nothing. I have about 20/400 in eye now but I don't want to lose peripheral vision if at all possible. Iris is torn and pupil doesn't dilate or contract well from original injury. He tells me he can remove vitreous, scar tissue, try to reattach retina and put gas bubble in while healing, but no guarantees that I will keep what vision I've got. I've just learned about silicone instead of gas so don't have to lay still as long, is that a viable option. What are the pros and cons? Really having a hard time deciding if I should try the surgery at all (I have back problems that act up when I'm inactive, so I'm really worried about that too!). Thank you.

these are questions for a surgeon.  sorry.  i am not a surgeon.  but as far as your back pain...we're talking about possible permanent vision loss here.  i would at least consider surgical repair.

Keep in mind I am not the forum doctor.

However, retinal detachments are never something you can just 'blow off' and not treat. I consider retinal detachments a medical emergency. We're talking about permanent vision loss here. Never ponder about surgery for DAYS when you are having retinal detachment. I don't think it's a hard choice in that virtually all untreated retinal detachments cause the patient to lose their gift of vision. You have everything to gain by getting the surgery.

My opinion? Opt for the surgery. Surgery for a retinal detachments is not something you should sit and DEBATE about.

I'm aware detached retina is normally an emergency. I've been to doc and it's progressing very slowly and he advised me to decide whether i want to go through with surgery since i'm already legally blind in that eye, basically just have some peripheral vision. he said i have some time to think about it. he also said because of the trauma, he's not sure surgery would be successful anyway.

Well, 100% you will lose your sight if you don't have the surgery, right?  If there's a chance, I'd go for it.  If you don't mind being totally blind in one eye, then I guess it really wouldn't matter.
