corneal transplant and its side effects

by preethi, Apr 01, 2007 12:00AM
I have severe corneal opacity with vision around 80pc only...i visited the best corneal eye hospital in india few years back and they adviced that i need to have a corneal transplant but it was not very safe in my case and might have some complications...
could u advice me on the surgery and the possible complications that might occur.. and its effectiveness in improving my vision...

well not too much advice i can really give you b/c i've never seen your cornea.  but a 'corneal transplant' or penetrating keratoplasty is exactly what it sounds like...replace your cornea with one from a donor.  it has the potential to greatly improve your vision if the vision loss is from corneal scarring.

the big 2 complications are transplant rejection and infection (endophthalmitis).
