eye surgery:post-vitrectomy bleeding

by mollyjane, Mar 21, 2007 12:00AM
My husband had complex vitrectomy, with photocoagulation of proliferative retinopathy vessels 6 days ago. On day 1 post op, he could count fingers 3-5 inches from his eye, and see color. On day 2 his vision became completely white(like looking through a cloud) and could not see a finger, only knew it was there when it touched his lashes. On day 5  he could barely see bright light and waving hand in front of his face (as a shadow) they done ultrasound and said he had had a new bleed and dr said remain upright, to encourage blood to settle (he does not have a gas bubble). dr said they may have to do an eye wash later.if it does not settle. With his major hemorrage prior to surgery, he saw blood swirling in his eye, and vision was not white. This time he sees swirling rarely and vision is white. He is terrified that he will never see again. today ,day 6, he seems to see light easier, and he could see that my shirt was white, could see a shadow (of waving hand) if it was in front of light. Is there any possibility that his vision will improve any further, as i don't know if the vision problem is more from the bleed, or could it still be some portion due to the surgery?
The decrease in vision from day 1, is what scares me. Also the dr told him to discontinue the dilating drops. It has been 36 hrs since his last drop, but his eye is still dilated. Could the dilation cause any of the vision problems? Once it is not dilated could his vision be anymore improved? Thank you

'Is there any possibility that his vision will improve any further'

yes.  it most likely will improve.  you're only 4 days or so out from 'another' hemorrhage...this is likely the worst it will get and he stands a good chance of seeing significantly better latter.  these things take time.  having bad vision now is not necessarily indicative of how his vision will be later.

'It has been 36 hrs since his last drop, but his eye is still dilated. Could the dilation cause any of the vision problems?'

no. not problems like you describe, no.

'Once it is not dilated could his vision be anymore improved?'

no.  his vision problem(s) are not from the dilation.

trust your surgeon and be optimistic...
