Scleral Buckle Shadow or Optical Nerve Stroke

by paulhk, Mar 18, 2007 12:00AM
Dear all

I had the Scleral Buckling surgery 5 weeks ago and now suspect to see the
buckle shadow in my peripheral vision which consists of a big
circular ring along the whole field of vision and a particular bigger darkish
dot at 6'oclock. The bubble was gone in day 9 and the shadow is very similar
to the symptom of retinal tears but the doctors checked several times to confirm the retina reattachment is very well. As the shape of the shadow looks very similar to the buckle so my doctor believes it is due to the buckle.

Searching the internet and find a person described a similar situation
after the buckling surgery and his doctor thought it may be the buckle
or due to a stroke of optical nerve - this is pretty scary.

So I want to listen to you guys experiences on buckle shadow or
optical nerve stroke after the buckling surgery and understand more
about my condition.

Additional information: the darkish dot has some sparks and light wrinkle moving slowly, but the light or spark cannot resemble any image under that spot.

Also, my doctor said as I had congenital cataract some 30 years ago
without IOL implantation, so I may see the buckle because of
refraction differerence without the lens, I doubt it though.

Any comments and sharings would be more than welcome!

Thanks for the quick reply.

One more additional information. My previous tear is at 10:30 direction and the recovering is pretty good. But the 6'oclock dot is not related the the tear and it is where the buckle pad (7mm diameter) situated (mirror of 12 o'clock).

Sorry if this is just another nervious patient.

i had the scleral buckle surgery about 3 weeks ago but i dont see a shadow of the buckle, or at least i dont think i do.  but i do notice some flickering light and there is a shadow that is similar to the one i had when my retina was detached.  and that shadow does make some movement and sometimes has flickering also.  i dont know if this helps but this is where i am at right now in my recovery stage.  i was told by my doctor that everything was fine though

Thanks for your sharing, my previously detached area is working good, with minor flickering as you do when in dim lighting environment.

I believe the buckle shadow is due to the removal of IOL without artificial lens implantation in the past cataract surgery, and think contact lens may help.
