Face Down Positioning - Both Eyelids Swollen

by PatTap, Mar 13, 2007 12:00AM
My wife had a Vitrectomy about 10 days ago for a retinal detachment and a macular hole in her left eye.  The doctor put her on face-down positioning which will continue for at least 2 weeks.  Subsequently, both eyelids became very swollen.  They're not painful, but it's difficult for her to open her eyes to get the eyedrops in.  When the doctor saw her a week after surgery it was difficult for them to take her eye pressure.  If anything, the swelling is even a little worse now.  I called the eye center about it, but aside from praising my wife for her adherence to the face-down positioning, the medical technician who took the call could offer no suggestions other than that I try using a qtip to either lift the upper eyelid or lower the lower eyelid when administering eyedrops.

My questions are:

1) Does this kind of swelling normally happen with face-down positioning? and

2) What can we do to reduce the swelling?

1) no i wouldnt consider that 'normal', but i also dont consider it dangerous and have no idea how to go about solving it

2) dont know.  the solution is stop going face down, which she cant do b/c of the mac hole repair.  she's stuck for awhile

I should clarify - I meant that the eyelids on both eyes are swollen.
