Monovision or Rezoom?

by Pudleboy, Mar 01, 2007 12:00AM
Due to a cataract I had a monfocal distance lens implanted in my dominant right eye in April 2002. My vision was good for both near and far as I was nearsighted in my left eye. I was satisfied with the results. My vision has since deteriorated in my left eye due to the growth of a cataract. Both intedrmedate and close are worse, distance is still ok but less sharp that before. I recently visited my Eye surgeon who said I am a good candidate for monovision. This would require a monsvision IOL in my left eye for close vision. Ihad heard of the ReZoom lens and asked about it. They say that is also an alternative but costs $2500 as itis considered cosmetic. I have heard that the best results are obtained when both eyes are done with the Rezoom. My question is will a ReZoom work well with the long distance IOL in my right eye. Secondly, will the use of a monovision lens in my left eye give me equivalent results? The doctor will be getting software to demonstrate to patients the potential oucome for the surgery. The Doctor has done one Rezoom implant. Very experienced surgeon who I have confidende in. Since Medicare pays all for the moofocal lenses I don't see a push for the ReZoom.

'My question is will a ReZoom work well with the long distance IOL in my right eye'

no, probably not.  all multifocals work much, much better when BOTHY eyes are multifocal.

'Secondly, will the use of a monovision lens in my left eye give me equivalent results?'

probably equivalent results as what you were previously doing, yes.

'Since Medicare pays all for the moofocal lenses I don't see a push for the ReZoom.'

me neither in this ase, especially since you were already happy with your previous monovision.  monofocal monovision iol is probably your best bet IMO

Forum OD Thanks for the advice. You are suggesting what my doctor had recommended from the start which was Monovision.  Current technology was not available when I had my first IOL in 2002.  I am reseearching what would give me the best results and looking at the newer technolgy.  When my left eye was funcioning better my vision was good in most ranges.  Glasses were not needed.  My brain had adjusted.  I presume with one IOL for far and one for close I will have some compromise.  My distance used to be sharper when my implant was new andmy midrange and near were acceptable.  Could the weakening of my left eye affect the sharpness of my current distant vision?  I now need to pull reading material up to about 6" of my face to get clarity.  I can not read newspapers either.  I had read about the Rezoom Lens and thought it might give me clearer sharper vision in more situations that a monofocal near vision lens in my left eye.  Is ReZoom like a progrssive bifocal? I had heard that rezoom was recommended in both eyes.  What are complaints about ReZoom.  For those that have had a rezoom in one eye and a monofocal in the other what results have they had.
Were they satisfied or not?  Thanks for the input.

most patients with one multifocal iol in one eye are NOT satisfied.  as for the other questions, too detailed and case specific to answer in a forum like this.  sorry.

As you may have seen on another thread, I have a ReZoom in right eye and nothing in the left.  I am very myopic and wear a monofocal contact in the left.  The ReZoom gives me just fair mid-distance vision - no better than the left eye with a monofocal contact.  Halo's at night are horrible.  I have given up driving after dark except very close to home on familiar roads.  I'm 55.  I can't read for more than about 30 min. at a time either with reading glasses or with the contact out of my left eye.  In the daytime, distance vision is fine.

I feel that I would be MUCH better off with a monofocal implant, but will probably have to pay out of my own pocket to get the ReZoom taken out and replaced.
