Restor vs. Rezoom - Dark vs Light

by mike98926, Feb 28, 2007 12:00AM
Am 53 and developed cataracts probably due to heavy prednisone use to manage Crohn's Disease.  Had a Rezoom in left eye 6 weeks ago and was very pleased with the clarity in the daylight.  Am able to read, do computer and see distance quite well.  Night vision is good but have the typical halos around all lights and reflective surfaces - looks like continual fireworks show!  Am hoping to get used to it.

Had a Restor put in right eye yesterday.  Acknowledging that it is way early for final results or judgements, but everything from that eye is yellow colored and probably 1/2 as bright as the rezoom side.  The rezoom eye was bright and clear from day one - like lifting an old yellow saran wrap film off of a bright white wall.  The restor remains yellow and very dim.

Is this typical of Restor?  I can't imagine it being a widely used IOL if that is the case as things seem way too dark and colored.  I will, of course, discuss with my doctor today on day 1 follow-up.  I am his first Restor and his first combination Rezoom/Restor and I am sure he wants a good result as well.

Any Restor folks out there with bright clear vision results?  Thanks and good luck to all.

no, not 'typical' of any iol to be 'yellow & dim' when compared to the other eye.

To: 1 day follow up Restor/Rezoom combo
Have 20/20 with both eyes at 1 day after Restor implant in second eye (Rezoom in left eye 6 weeks ago).

Yellow tint is thought by Dr. to be from the Restor which is yellow tinted to block blue light.  Dimness is progressing as I write and most likely due to medication at surgery that was used to center the lens - pupil is still very tiny, but opening up and letting in more light as we go.

Was not aware of the yellow tint to the lens and with the clear Rezoom in the left eye the end result is good.  Only when I look just through the Restor eye does the world change to yellowish.

At this stage I am overwhelmed with the vision from mixing the two lenses and am optimistic that things will only get better.

Have not driven at night yet with both lenses in so cannot speak to halo improvement.  The ghosting, especially on TV text, that was very present with the Rezoom eye alone seems to have improved dramatically with the insertion of the Restor in the second eye.  Whoo Hooo.

Will post again at the one week follow-up since this mixing of lenses is something that is relatively new and I know I had a hard time getting feedback as to how it was working for folks prior to doing it myself.

To: Am I a candidate for Rezoom?
Due to a cataract I had a monfocal distance lens implanted in my dominant right eye in April 2002.  My vision was good for both near and far as I was nearsighted in my left eye.  I was satisfied with the results.  My vision has since deteriorated in my left eye due to the growth of a cataract.  Both intedrmedate and close are worse, distance is still ok but less sharp that before.  I recently visited my Eye surgeon who said I am a good candidate for monovision.  This would require a monsvision IOL in my left eye for close vision.  Ihad heard of the ReZoom lens and asked about it.  They say that is also an alternative but costs $2500 as itis considered cosmetic.  I have heard that the best results are obtained when both eyes are done with the Rezoom.  My question is will a ReZoom work well with the long distance IOL in my right eye.  Secondly, will the use of a monovision lens in my left eye give me equivalent results?  The doctor will be getting software to demonstrate to patients the potential oucome for the surgery.  The Doctor has done one Rezoom implant.  Very experienced surgeon who I have confidende in.  Since Medicare pays all for the moofocal lenses I don't see a push for the ReZoom.

"My question is will a ReZoom work well with the long distance IOL in my right eye"

no, probably not. all multifocals work much, much better when BOTHY eyes are multifocal.

"Secondly, will the use of a monovision lens in my left eye give me equivalent results?"

probably equivalent results as what you were previously doing, yes.

"Since Medicare pays all for the moofocal lenses I don't see a push for the ReZoom."

me neither in this ase, especially since you were already happy with your previous monovision. monofocal monovision iol is probably your best bet IMO

It is likely that you were implanted with the ReSTOR containg the "natural" tint. The tint is designed to be a blue blocking agent (similar to those Blue blocker sunglasses). Since the ReZoom is clear, you can notice the difference between the the transimission qualities of the two lenses. You should probably discuss this with your surgeon.
