Retina Detatchment + 2 surgeries

by busted, Jan 31, 2007 12:00AM
I am 25 years old and my eye site was about -3.0. One month ago I had surgery for retina detatchment on my right eye and scleral buckle was placed in the eye. The healing of the eye was good but I still couldn't see properly. The Doc said that the fluid is not dissolved byitself.

Two days ago (on 01/29) I had to go through Vitrectomy (I believe that's what it is called), the fluid/gel was removed and a gas bubble is placed in the eye. For the first one day I was told to lie flat with face down and then lie on left side from thereon.

I only see light but no immages through this eye. How many days it will take before I will be able to see properly? Is the reason that I don't see any immages because of the gas bubble? Would I be able to laser correct eye site later.

these questions are not easy to answer.  every case is different.  there is no "expected" amount of time that holds true for every case.  some people see well again very quickly.  some people lose all vision forever.  you will likely fall somewhere in between.  i have no idea how long it will be before you see again, or even if you will see again.

whether you can have laser or not later...thats a trick question.  you might could have lasik to get rid of the -3.00, and you may later need to have laser retinal procedures to tack down parts of your retina.  those are not the same as each other.  "laser" surgery is not a "fix-all".  people kind of get this idea that whatever eye problem they have can just be magically fixed with "laser" but cases like yours will probably never be significantly helped by any laser procedure.

keep all of your follow up appointments and do exactly as your surgeon suggests...and hope for the best.  thats all you can do.  i have no idea how long it will take.  your surgeon probably doesnt know, either.

Hang in there. (Please see my other comments) The gas bubble makes it very difficult to see.  The longer the gas bubble stays the longer your retina has to heal.  I know it feels like you are going blind but you are not.  Think positive and don't let fear/anxiety take over.  Listen to your surgeons.

Scar tissue is a problem with younger retina patients. Unfortunaley, my surgeon told me that if I was an "old broad" of say 80 I would not have had the problems that I did with scar tissue etc.

A friend of mine is an attorney of aprox. 38 years old.  He had two surgeries.  The second was with the gas bubble. ( like you)  He is doing great.  He has to wear glasses that he never wore before (they are still very stylish..lol) and has good vision.  The recovery period does seem very long.......Hang in there.....Don't rush things.  Here's hoping you'll be back in the swing by summer.
