Post-Op Vitrectomy/Scleral Buckle

by soccer10, Jan 17, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I'm 21 yrs.old and going on 6 weeks ago, I had to have an emergency vitrectomy and scleral buckle surgery on my left eye.  I got hit in the eye with the ball during a soccer game.  I'm pretty nearsighted, and the perscription in my left eye is -3.00.

Prior to surgery, I would run and lift weights 5 days a week.  My Dr. just released me to return to my normal activities( running, working out, etc.), but I'm nervous!  I won't be playing soccer anymore, but I'm eager to get back into the gym.  I'm no body builder, but I like to think for a girl, I lift a good amount of weight.  My Dr. explained to me how the surgery will keep my retina in place, but I'm having a hard time understanding how the constant pounding while running or the straining while lifting the weights won't cause another detachment.  Or will it? Should I be this paranoid?

I'm not doubting my Dr. in anyway, I just think I need to hear that I'll be okay.

-3.00 is not very nearsighted.  thats still what i consider "mild" myopia.

this question comes up all the time both here and emailed to me.  there are multiple different opinions on this.  i will give you mine.  if/when you do a LOT of internet research you definitely will come across other doctors (and some patients) saying conflicting things to what i am about to post.  you dont have to come back here and post the links to those differing opinions and ask me what i think of them b/c i've already seen them all, i guarantee.  anyway here's MY OPINION:

people who are over about -7.00 OR who have had previous retinal hole/tear/detachment probably need to avoid head jarring sports or activities where the probability of head or eye injury is high.  things like BOXING are definitely out.  soccer is a tough call b/c i personally do not consider the probability of head or eye injury in soccer to be EXCESSIVELY high (and i played high school & college soccer!).  anyway i digress.  boxing is out.  racecar driving is out.  but i personally do NOT consider weightlifting to be particularly dangerous.  i personally think weightlifting is probably fine after full recovery of RD.
