distortion, inflamation flowing cataract surgery

by snowybarb, Jan 06, 2007 12:00AM
I am now post op 2 months+ on my right eye, the doctor did call me that evening to see how I was doing - told him it ached, I define the term pain as severe and incapacititating. Told to use extra Nevanac. Saw the PA the following day told I was severely swollen, since it was not visible, had to be internally. Saw the surgeon the following week and was placed on Pred Forte I was not happy and told him I was not safe to drive, went 3 weeks later

supposedly saw 20/20 distance but that was at 10 feet and I stated that to him. Surgeon claimed that was adinfinum. I had cancelled the left eye surgery because of not feeling safe to drive back in Nov. I may be scheduled for the left eye on 1/15/07 and due to scheduling problems and the need for a driver, I saw the senior partner on 1/4/07, my acuity has been reduced and I have distortion nasally, as well as seeing or something like the edge of the inplanted lens temporally - always in the morning and evening and can occur randomly during the day, was put back on the Pred Forte as well as the Nevanac.I am scheduled to see the senior partner on 1/11/07 to see if the distortion is still present and then will dialate the eye.

I live in a relatively small area and our healthcare is not the best in all medical areas. Please advise as I am beginning to think I should not have the 2nd surgery or wait until I have no choice. I do appreicate the increased light with the cataract removal of the R eye.

not easy to "advise" on cases like this.  you have to decide yourself whether the risk of further pain/distortion/etc is worth it for the gain in vision.

If I were in your situation, I would definitely postpone the surgery in my left eye until the problems (reduced acuity and distortion) in my right eye had resolved.  I'm glad to hear that you are now being followed by a senior partner in the practice.  Let us know how your followup exam on January 11 goes.

nevenac is not a steroid...its an "NSAID"...non-steroidal anti-inflammatory.  i personally do not believe that any NSAID is "better" at getting rid of inflammation than a steroid.  they dont work as well IMO.  but they have less risks/side effects than steroids do...

I continue with the retinal swelling and Nevanac is like NSAID however the Pred Forte is not - it is a steriod.  No surgery now for the 15th of this month - retina in the right remains swollen and in case anyone is wondering I do not have diabetes.

The distortion nasally has resolved but I can only clearly see 20/50 as in driving with the right eye. However, I can see clearly with refraction.

While the "plan" was to bring the right eye to 20/20 with limited to nearly nothing intermediate ranges and reduce the left eye by 3/4 of a diopter after the cataract removal so that I could pick intermeiate range but would still need glasses for reading and that has not happened - today I called the practice first thing this AM as I was to start on additional drops for the left eye on Friday and ran over a curb again shortly after the eye appointment. Refraction on the right eye yesterday - I could see clearly at 20/20, turns out in the present state I am half diopter off in the eye plus the astigmation which can result from the surgery. As of yesterday supposedly my right eye was healed enough to go ahead with the left eye.  One of my comments today was that I know presently the left with proper correction my left can still see 20/20, as that cataract is not as dense as the right was, and if I am going to need glasses to see clearly I would go that way.  I also asked if I can expect any further improvement in the right and the answer was might/maybe.

If at the 2/1/07 visit I am still being told that I have retinal swelling - after doing a lot of searching on the Internet I found that this can happen in about 3% of the cases but usually resolves at 3 months - the 2/1 is close enough to 3 months as I remain both on the Pred Forte (Prednisone) and Nevanax as well as Alrex (allergy medication) and Restasis for dry eye, then I will seek another opinion.

Needless, to say I am totalaly frustrated!  I am also very appreciative of the added light and seeing white as white now with the right eye.  I also know now that it can be with glasses to 20/20 these are positive things.
