Microcornea with squint

by Amry, Jan 03, 2007 12:00AM
Hi Doctor

I have micro-cornea and squint in my left eye since birth. The squint might have increased a little bit since birth, but even now it is not very severe. I am interested in getting the squint corrected. The doctor has informed me that since I do not have vision in the left eye, the surgery's effect may last only 5-10 years and after that the eye may move back to the original place.

Would like to know the following things:

1. Does getting operated weaken the eye muscles and the increase squint after some years of being fine, than in a situation if I do not go in for a operatiion?

2. If I undergo surgery how many years do you think the effect will last?

Thanks

1) no, getting the strabismus/squint corrected does not "weaken" (nor does it "strengthen") any muscles

2) unpredictable.  depends on how bad the vision is.

an eye needs a target to look at in order to be straight.  if the target is too blurry or dark, or if the brain has learned to IGNORE the image from that eye (called "suppression") then there's always the chance the eye will not point straight ahead.  these are tough cases...difficult to predict what will happen.  may work on you...may not.
