Can Phakic lens in the eyes cause high intraocular pressure?

by Spiku, Dec 28, 2006 12:00AM
Two months ago, I got Phakic lens implants in both eyes. After 7 hours of the surgery, I had terrible pain in my right eye, and I vomited several times, then I went back to clinic. The doctor told me I had pressure of 59 mm Hg. The doctor helped me to evacuated the liquid inside the eye that is used during surgery, so my pressure went back to normal. However, after one week, my both eyes' pressure is 38, and my doctor gave me drops to put. After one month, my pressure went back to 19 and now doctor told me to stop using the drop and come back to clinic to see if my pressure again will rise back. I want to know if phakic lens will cause high pressure after several years. Also, in FDA site, it said that phakic lens cause faster corneal's cell death rate, is it true? One last question, I recently have a small black dot on the white part of my right eye, and it causes pain for more than two days, is it very serious?

usually having an iol inserted causes your pressure to go DOWN.  having a pressure spike after cataract extraction sounds like a possible temporary inflammatory process to me...not the surgeon's fault and not caused by your implant.  just bad luck.  so NO.  phakic implants do not "cause" pressure spikes.

i have no idea if iol's cause faster corneal cell death rate or not.  to be blunt...who cares?  if you cant see b/c of a cataract and you need cataract extraction, what difference does it make?  especially since you already had the surgery...

i dont know what the small black dot is.  you'll have to ask your doc.

Medicinenet.com lists increased IOP as a known risk of phakic iols.  I'm certainly no expert on this topic, but I think you can trust the information on the FDA website.
