Recommendations IOL Surgeon Dallas??

by LindasueDallas, Nov 27, 2006 12:00AM
I'm considering having a ReZoom, Restor and/or Crystalens lens replacement in both eyes.  I'm trying to avoid the advertised doctors who seem to run their office like a factory though I guess the benefit is that they have done a lot of these types of surgeries.  But, there must be corneal opthamologists that do IOL surgery in their private practice in Dallas.  If anyone has any recommendations, I'd appreciate it!  Thanks.

corneal specialists are different from cataract specialists.  i mean there are plenty of people who do both, but a "corneal specialist" is really not who you are looking for.

i dont know a soul in Dallas, no do i usually provide referrals anyway... but someone here will.  good luck!

Can you give a referral for St. Louis, Missouri?  Also, I have one Rezoom in my dominate eye. Having one  multifocal gives a feeling of imbalance.  However, the surgeon that implanted it, and told me for months that a second Rezoom would only improve my vision, changed to saying a second Rezoom could cause distorded vision due to increased astigmatism in my second eye. Had I been told this before the surgery, I would have never gone with one multifocal and one traditional, which is now what this doctor recommends. Presently my vision is clear outside and inside, except for my PVD problem. But when inside, when I close my unoperated eye, my vision gets blurry because my Rezoom eye dilates. In your opinion would a second Rezoom enchance my vision or distort it?  I dislike the feeling of imbalance but am afraid that if I have the second eye operated upon with a Rezoom, when inside I will have blurry vision as my unoperated eye seems to take over now when inside, though leaving me with a feeling of imbalance. Thanks in advance for info you could offer to me.

I made an appointment with Wes Herman and I'm concerned because they said I only had to be without my contacts for several days before my exam for an IOL surgery.  Everything I've read on this board suggests this is really not at all a long enough time; when I asked the receptionist about just 3 days, she said it was very common.  And, the two other doctors listed won't see you "in person."  They have someone who takes you through the process...you meet with another opthamalogist who reviews all the measurements...and you don't see the doc until the surgery.  Don't want that either. I'm going to go through with the apptmnt with Herman (but not wear my contacts for 2 weeks)..but I'd love another opinion obviously.  So, any other Dallas/Ft Worth names would be great.

Linda Sue,

James McCully, M.D. (214-648-2020) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas is listed by Castle/Connolly as one of the "Best Docs" in America.  He is a full professor of ophthalmology and specializes in cataract surgery, laser vision correction and corneal disease.

You can check the website (www.castleconnolly.com) for info as to how their list of "best docs" is made.  (Inclusion is through nomination from other doctors, with some other criteria.)  I know such listings are controversial, but I've had four eye surgeries with docs from their list, all with excellent results.  (And all of these docs were quite personable, too.)

BTW, I think it would be a mistake to eliminate the two surgeons whom you wouldn't meet until your surgery.  Probably neither would win a congeniality award, but I'm guessing that they both have excellent surgical skills.

K-D,

Sorry, I could find no listing for cataract surgeons in St. Louis.

You should not wear contacts due to them affecting your K readings in your cornea so they can be more accurate with your readings for the correct IOL power. I am sure the doctor will discuss this with you more when you talk to him. Hermann has being doing multifocal IOL's for over 8 years and knows what he is doing.
