Risperdol and Bedwetting

by momothree, Sep 01, 2002 12:00AM
My 7 year old son has just been discharged from an inpatient unit where he was started on risperdol.  He has started to wet the bed  and/or his underwear at night.  Is this a common side effect and what can be done to correct it?  He was admitted for depression and has a problem with self-esteem.  Starting to wet the bed will certainly aggravate this self-esteem issue.  His risperdol dose is .25 mg BID.  He is also currently on 20mg of Prozac per day taken in the morning.

Yes, it is possible that the enuresis is a side effect of his medication. Discuss this with his psychiatrist. Whether to make a change is a product of weighing the benfits of the medication against the negative impact of the side effect.

Hi,

I'm just wondering how the your son is reacting to the two meds. And for how long. My 6 yr.old is on 4 mg of Risperdal and just to let you know weight gain is very common. My son was all skin and bones and is now puffed out of his new school clothes. He does not wet the bed, but wonder if the extra rapid weight gain has anything to do with it.

My son hasn't shown any weight gain, but we wouldn't expect that yet as he has only been taking it since 8/20.  He is pretty upset about this bedwetting and I am not sure whether the anxiety over this is worth the med.  He was put on it to relieve his anxiety.  I feel like we are spinning our wheels here.  We tried seroquel, but the 100 mg daily made him sooooo sleepy, he couldn't function.

As we see more positive effects from the antidepressant, I am wondering if the anti-anxiety/anti-aggression meds are necessary.

If your son is doing well on an anti-depressant then that's great! I never heard Risperdal used for anxiety, but I guess my son has calmed down a bit from his anxieties. Hey, he wears socks now. I would think that he would have been put on a milder form of an axiety med than an anti-psychotic med. ?????

I'm having a horrible rash on my arms, hands and face since Memorial weekend and the doctors put me on VISTARIL 25mg. It's for anti-itching, but also for anxiety. Heck of alot less side affects than Risperdal.
