Dexedrine

by Anna, Jun 11, 2000 12:00AM
My son has just begun taking Dexedrine, 5mg in the morning he is on a 4 week program slowly progressing him to 20 mg daily.  It has only been 5 days but he is so emotional, its like a roller coaster here.  He is very quick to temper and just as quick to tears...Will this level itself out?  Will he have more stable moods when his body adjusts to the medication?

Dear Anna,

It's too early to tell if this reaction will abate. Some children do react to stimulant medications with emotional lability of the sort your son is displaying. Starting off at a low dose and gradually titrating upwards is the sensible approach. If your son's emotional state does not level off, he might do better on one of the other stimulant medications or stimulant compounds.
