10 year old takes retribution out on others when father disciplines him

by Paul De La Mare, May 17, 2000 12:00AM
My nephew is 10 years old and when his father disciplines him for, say, swearing he takes is anger out on his brother and sister, not aggressively, but more in a "don't bother me attitude".

What is the reason for this?

Dear Mr. De La Mare,

Without the benefit of speaking with your nephew, I can't be sure why he might be behaving this way. Having said that, it's likely that he is simply feeling angry about the discipline and displacing this anger onto others in his family environment. This would be considered a fairly normal family development. Children are not famous for confining their emotional reactions to the person mostly involved in the situation that prompted the anger.
