10yr old strange behavior

by Sherri, Apr 02, 2000 12:00AM
My 10yr old step-son has been diagnosed with ADD and is taking Ritalyn and Impramine for bedwetting.  His recent behaviors is our greatest concern for myself and my husband.  While with his mother for visitation, he started a fire on a compost bin with gasoline and matches he said he found.  He said he wanted to see what would happen.  He also broke valuable antique jars by smashing them on the garage floor.   He said he did know why he did this. The most concerning behavior of all is that we have found feces in the shower after he has taken a shower and I have caught him coming out of the shower with feces still on him. Properly cleaning himself has always been a problem with him, but this goes be on that.  He is a extremly sensitive child,  very intelligent, but without the Ritalyn he is so disorganized and almost "retarded"  What can be done with this child?

Dear Sherri,

The behaviors you describe are symptoms of emotional disturbance, and there is only one sensible intervention. Your stepson should be evaluated by a pediatric mental health clinician. That person can guide you and your husband about treatment possibilities after a thorough evaluation is concluded.
