OSTEOATHRITIS AND FEET PAIN AND INFLAMATION

by hazel44, Mar 22, 2007 12:00AM
i am 44 years old asian female. In September 2006 ,I have had a full hystrectomy(vagianl) due to having endometriosis and adenomyosis. After two weeks of that operation,I started having really a bad backache.I felt it in all of my spine but my GP assessed me on the most painful part on my spine and did the Xrays on thoracic spine. My knees have been also hurting so, at the same time we discussed this with GP and she also requested the right knee xrays. The result came back positive conforming I had OA in my both parts. I am just 9 stones(57 KG) and5 feet i inches tall. Now, my feet especially the left foot is in a great deal of pain since last three months.I been to see Orthopeadist and he ordered an MRI on my lumbar spine.
The MRI did not find the cause of the left foot but did say "There is some reduction in signal of the L4/5 and L5/S1,but no evidence of loss of disc.At L2/3 and L3/4 no abnormality is seen. At L4/5 there is some signal loss from the disc but no evidence of disc prolapes. The spinal canal appears entirely adeduate in size and the lower spinal cord appears normal."
I have burning sensation at all the time in my both feet.In the night time and during the day I have to put a pillow under neath my feet to rest as I feel inflammation in my toes,in my left foot heel and in the arch of my left foot.I am also growing bunion feet(big toes are pointing out to the others and the joint is sticking out).I am a slim built but feel pain in my legs in my both knees and in my spine and waiting to be seen by pain clinc especialist to get an injection.
Can you advise whats wrong with feet.(I wear flat and comfy shoes all the time).

You have had a pretty good evaluation for your symptoms.  At this time, I would pursue neurologic causes of the symptoms.  This can include evaluation with nerve conduction studies, as well as blood tests looking for metabolic disease - like diabetes, thyroid dysfunction and vitamin b-12 deficiency.

I would consider a referral to either a neurologist or podiatrist.  If there is evidence of a nerve abnormality, this can be corrected by addressing the cause of the disease, or via medications.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Thankyou for reply,I have had tested for full blood count, thyriod dysfunction and the metabolic diseases and all came back negative. However, the sypmtoms in my feet have worsen and now the symtoms have spreaded in my hands and in my fingers nails.
During my sleep I have to have a pillow  kept underneath my feet and one pilow in between my legs (against the shins and knees) to over come with the inflammation and discomfort. I feel this in the evenings  and first thing in the mornings and I feel my toe's nails have been pulled off (burning sensations in my nails and tingling feelings, painful toes joints in my both feet).
My question is does the FBC or the tests  for which were carried out earlier on be enough to prove or rule-out the ANA and RA factors or should I ask my doctor to reqest another type of blood test ?? My feet are inflammed at most of the time.I read on the internet that HLA-b27 would be beneficial to detect RA.
I also have sacroilac joints inflammtion which trigger of in my lower back and buttocks into my left let leg .As as result of this I have less strength in my left leg ,it feels heavy as i lift it whilst i am lying down flat and find dull pain in my left thigh joint.this has been going on for about eight years but it was first thought to be sciatic pain as I did have Endometriosis (pelvic inflammtory disease) in past.

Can you advise please??or anyone with similair symptoms can they advise??

To: Burning feet
I,too, sleep with feet on pillow and/or between foot & knees.  2 Orthopedic specialists have prescribed meds which make me very sleepy, so I don't take often as my job requires me to be alert.  I recently  saw a general orthopedic Dr. for inured wrist & shoulder.  I've had 2 cordozone shots which not only relieved my painful shoulder & wrist, but my feet have felt wonderful.  An "over the counter" pain reliever gel called "Biofreeze" applied at night [along with wearing heavy socks during night] does seem to help.  My husband uses Biofreeze for  arthritis.  Please note, I have no affiliation with Biofreeze. [wear gloves when applying as it is "hot".]
